The Reckoning
More than twenty albums into his 40 year career, Steve Tilston’s a musician who’s seen more Folk revivals come and go than most. But listening to the finely crafted songs and deft guitar work on this album, the mystery remains why he’s never quite made it to the same venerated pantheon as many of his more successful contemporaries. Certainly he’s got the credentials. On the insightful ‘Memory Lane’, his vocals recall Nic Jones and his effortless flowing guitar work on ‘Sovereign Of Tides’ could easily be a Davey Graham out take. Subtle string bends provide an unexpected bluesy feel to the jaunty Doubting Thomas, and like all great artists, Tilston uses his references as a palette rather than a crutch.
