New Country Rehab
This is the self-titled debut release from a foursome who have already been tipped as the ‘next big thing’ in Canadian country music. Their songs revolve around themes of death, love and loss, written in the folk-country storytelling tradition of Hank Williams, yet played with an indie rock sensibility which manages to pay respect to the genre while simultaneously dragging it right up to date. ‘The Houses In This Town Are All Falling Down’ shades into insanely catchy postmodern surf rock, and there’s even a dub-reggae reinvention of the Hank Williams classic ‘Ramblin’ Man’; and yet, at its heart, this is an album by four guys with a deep and evident love of country music and Americana. Recommended.
